If you are new to social media when it comes to B2C marketing, it can be tricky to navigate your way through this unknown territory to get the results you’re longing for. So, Social Target is here to help give you a headstart to make this new path for you a walk in the park with a handful of dos and don’ts for you to take advantage of.
Let’s start on the don’ts first, because it can be easier to know what not to do when you start!
The Don’ts
Don’t presume posting every day will increase your engagement
Some people are under the impression that the more they post on their social accounts surely means the more engagement they’ll get, right? Wrong. In fact, it can have the total opposite effect, which is definitely not what we want.
Don’t post too little, either
Post too little and it is likely your posts won’t receive a very high reach which can lead to you being pushed to the back of your audience’s mind. However, if you post too much you can become a nuisance to your followers which can result in an unfollow and a negative perception of your brand.
But that’s ok, this can be an easy mistake to make and it isn’t the end of the world! Having a more structured posting schedule with a good balance is what we want. I recommend 2-3 posts a week, which can be beneficial for two reasons…• Your posts will become much more impactful to your audience. Not posting every day means you’ll avoid getting to a point where you aren’t sure what to post, you won’t be posting for the sake of it so your content will be better received by your audience. It’s all about quality, not quantity.• It is just the right amount to uphold a great social media presence, without causing overkill for your audience making them much more likely to engage.
Don’t use all social media platforms if it isn’t necessary
Each social media platform has a different purpose and audience to the other. For example, if you are a corporate enterprise, Linkedin and Twitter will be the best social media platforms for you opposed to Facebook and Instagram.
Being on every single social media platform when it isn’t necessary is simply creating more work for yourself for no reason whatsoever. Stick to the channels relevant to your business and brand for the best results.
Don’t go off-brand
Your brand is what differentiates you from other businesses out there. It is who you are, and it reflects what you stand for as well as your goals and ambitions. To go off-brand and use a different tone of voice and creative can throw your audience off and make your channels inconsistent; potentially jeopardising your brand awareness.
Your brand should remain consistent across all social channels to increase your brand awareness. That doesn’t mean your content should be identical across all platforms, but it does mean your brand should still shine through.
The Do’s
Do communicate with your audience
Communicating with your audience is so important! Did somebody ask a question? Answer it. Have you spotted a comment on one of your posts and you see the opportunity to engage in conversation? Reply. It’s little things like this that go a long way with your consumers, and it is very well reflected on the type of business you are depending on how you respond, and how quickly you do it.
But that doesn’t mean you need to reply to every single comment, it’s about knowing when to pick and choose the right moments.
Do tailor your posts for the platform you are posting on
Every single social media platform has a different purpose and demographic, therefore your content fit each one accordingly.
Got some great photography you want to share? Share it on a platform that will truly appreciate it like Instagram. Got an interesting post regarding your industry you want to share with like-minded fanatics? Twitter or Linkedin would be a great fit.
Do have fun!
One of the most important things you should ensure you do…is have fun! Nobody will be interested in a boring social media account, so if you’re having fun producing content, I can guarantee your audience will enjoy it on their feed even more.
So there you have it, a handful of dos and don’ts for you to take note of and apply to your channels to kickstart your social media journey.
However, if you don’t have the time to action the above points, or would like to leave it to somebody else to take care of, then look no further! Social Target would be more than happy to get to work on a social media strategy for you, to implement onto your channels to get them in tip-top shape and achieve outstanding results.
