Twitter Finally Announces Roll Out of Long-Awaited Edit Button

This isn’t a drill people. I repeat this is not a drill.

Twitter has always been a very individual platform. It is safe to say that there aren’t many similarities when you compare it to other social media platforms out there like Facebook or Linkedin, and it has always stuck true to its roots while other platforms were forever updating their UI.

But, this means that sometimes Twitter can be deemed as a bit behind the times with its failure to introduce new features. Which has resulted in millions of tweets from users expressing the need for change.

First, we asked Twitter to enhance the character limit – as who can fit what they want to say in just 140 characters?! Not me, that’s for sure. So in November 2017, this was increased to 280 characters which most users were thrilled about.

Unfortunately for Twitter though, this wasn’t enough as back in 2019 it was announced that Twitter’s monthly user rate was diminishing at a pretty drastic rate…three quarters in a row to be exact. So the tech giant decided it was no longer going to disclose this information, and stated that “Twitter should not be compared to other networks” and has never spoken on the matter since.

However, that hasn’t been enough in hiding the fact Twitter is not the front-runner it used to be in the world of social media. Users are turning to other social media platforms, and businesses left, right and centre are more prone to using the likes of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Linkedin for their marketing.

It’s finally here…

So what could Twitter possibly do to try and claw back some of its users, and encourage people to give them a second chance?

Our days of having to awkwardly delete and re-post tweets with typos will soon be gone forever, as the thing we have all been asking for the last decade is finally here! That’s right people, an edit button!

Yesterday, they announced that the ability to edit tweets (finally) is being rolled out to Twitter Blue members in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with the US happening at some point in the near future. This tweet came after they had a successful test run of the Twitter edit button back in September, which of course, they had to tease users with.

No mention of the UK has been featured just yet, but it is predicted this will follow after the US launch as they are only at the first stage of the button’s roll out.

To conclude…

This is a very exciting day for all marketers, businesses and users out there, but will it encourage more users to re-download the app and use it as much as its competitors? Only time will tell.
